How to Choose a Security Door in Egypt: A 7-Point Buyer’s Guide

Buying a security door is one of those decisions you only make once every 20 years — and the cost of getting it wrong is more than just money. A poorly chosen door can fail in a burglary attempt, warp in the Egyptian summer, or simply look out of place next to a beautiful villa façade. This guide walks through the seven things every Egyptian homeowner should check before signing off on a new door.

1. Steel-core construction — not just a steel finish

“Steel door” in the Egyptian market can mean a lot of things. Some sellers laminate a thin steel sheet over a hollow wood core and call it a security door. A real security door has a galvanized steel structure — typically 1.2 mm to 1.5 mm thick — that runs the full height and width of the door, reinforced with longitudinal Omega profiles. The wood you see on the outside is a facade, not the load-bearing layer. Ask to see a cutaway sample at the showroom before you buy.

2. The frame is as important as the door

Most break-ins don’t break the door — they break the frame. A door that’s strong but installed in a 1 mm sheet-metal frame fastened with short screws is a weak door. The frame should be 1.5 mm treated steel, anchored into the wall with at least 8 long bolts, and have its own reinforcement around the lock-side and hinge-side strike plates. If a vendor only quotes you the door and won’t talk about the frame, walk away.

3. The locking system: multi-point, not multi-bolt

A standard residential door has one lock with one latch. A real security door uses a multi-point locking system — typically a central lock that simultaneously throws bolts at multiple points along the lock side, the top, and sometimes the hinge side too. The standard for premium doors in Egypt is now 9-point locking: 1 central latch, 7 side points, and 1 top point. Cheaper imports often advertise “multi-point” but only have 3 or 5 — fine for an apartment door, not enough for a villa entrance.

4. The facade has to survive Egyptian weather

Damietta winters are damp; Cairo summers hit 45 °C; coastal homes face salt air. A natural-wood veneer that looks beautiful in a showroom can crack, warp, or peel within a year on a poorly insulated south-facing villa entrance. Look for Italian-laminated wood or HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) facades — both are pressed under heat and pressure to bond the layers, which makes them far more dimensionally stable than glued-on veneers. If a salesperson can’t tell you whether the finish is Italian-laminated, that’s a warning sign.

5. Sound and heat insulation

A hollow door transmits everything — street noise, hallway conversations, the heat from a sun-baked landing. A properly built security door is filled with rock wool (sometimes polyurethane foam in cheaper models) between the steel skins. Rock wool gives better sound insulation, doesn’t burn, and doesn’t degrade over time. For apartments in busy neighborhoods (Mohandessin, Heliopolis, Downtown Alexandria), this single feature is often the one residents notice the most.

6. Custom dimensions, not standard sizes

Egyptian doorways are not standard. A 1980s apartment in Maadi has a different opening than a 2020 villa in New Cairo. Vendors who only sell stock 100 × 200 cm or 100 × 215 cm doors will force you to either trim your wall or live with gaps that defeat the seal. A reputable manufacturer measures your opening on site and builds the door + frame to fit. Expect this to add 7–14 days to delivery, which is normal.

7. Warranty + installation by the manufacturer

The door is only as good as the installation. A factory-fitted door installed by trained technicians sits flush, locks smoothly, and seals against draft. The same door installed by a generic carpenter often binds within months. Make sure your supplier does the installation themselves, with a written warranty (5+ years on structure, 1–2 years on the lock mechanism) that covers parts, labor, and on-site service.
